MLA Neill says construction on Shorncliffe Avenue improvements expected to begin next week
SECHELT – NDP MLA Randene Neill says that soon, pedestrians and drivers in Sechelt will benefit from improvements to a busy stretch of Highway 101 near Shorncliffe Avenue, making it safer to travel through this area of Sechelt.
“These safety improvements to Highway 101 at Shorncliffe Avenue will make crossing the highway much safer for pedestrians and cyclists. I want to thank residents for their advocacy around this issue in our community,” said Randene Neill, MLA for Powell River-Sunshine Coast. “During construction, motorists are asked to be aware and understand there may be occasional delays. I know we are all looking forward to seeing the new crosswalk and upgrades to this intersection.”
Safety improvements to the Shorncliffe Avenue intersection include a new signalized intersection with turning lanes, modern pedestrian crossing and drainage improvements to enhance safety and the long-term reliability of the route.
The project will also reconstruct the roadway to include new, accessible sidewalks, traffic signals and pedestrian warning lights to ease pedestrian and traffic movements along the route.
A $3 million contract for the work was awarded to Maycon Construction Management (2023) Ltd. Work is anticipated to begin next week and expected to be complete in summer 2026.
The improvements are being prioritized as part of the broader mission to bring greater safety and long-term viability to this corridor, after the Ministry of Transportation and Transit recently completed the Highway 101 Alternate Route Planning Study.
The work follows other improvements made recently along Highway 101, including pedestrian improvements at Poplars Trailer Park, the new pedestrian signal at Oceanview Drive, and the reduced speed zone extension of the 60 km/h speed limit outside Gibsons.
People are asked to take extra care while travelling in the area as work gets underway, and drivers are reminded to obey all safety signage and check DriveBC for the most up-to-date information.
