VICTORIA – New Democrat MLA Dana Lajeunesse’s bill to prevent reckless driving, known informally as Xavier’s Law, passed second reading yesterday evening, the next step to becoming a law.

The Private Members Bill, titled Motor Vehicle Amendment Act (No.2), 2025, was created in memory of Xavier Rasul-Jankovics, a young boy from Cobble Hill who was killed by a reckless driver last year.

“Xavier’s family have tirelessly advocated for safer roads,” said Lajeunesse, MLA for Juan de Fuca-Malahat. “Moving this important piece of legislation to committee stage is a step towards preventing similar senseless tragedies from happening in the future.”

The bill would create a 30-day driving prohibition for those who engage in reckless driving, while requiring police to report every reckless driving incident to the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles. The goal of the bill is to ensure patterns of dangerous behaviour can be identified and addressed before tragedies occur.

The bill now moves onto review by a committee of MLAs from all parties. Members of the public can also share their feedback or support of the bill through the online consultation portal here. The consultation will be open until March 10, 2026.
