Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Lincoln Alexander Day:

“The son of a maid and a railway worker, Lincoln MacCauley Alexander would rise to the highest office in the Province of Ontario, serving as the 24th in a long line of distinguished Lieutenant Governors.

“Alexander was a remarkable public servant in every sense of the term. Attending law school after his military service, he was appointed Queen’s Counsel at the age of 43.

“Though he lost in his initial run for office, he returned in 1968 to win the first of five elections in his beloved home riding of Hamilton West. A strong voice for his city and province in Ottawa, ‘Linc’ was the first Black Canadian to serve as an MP and, in time, federal minister.

“Embodying his own motto of ‘Confidence, Determination and Perseverance’, Alexander’s trailblazing story is an inspiration to Canadians of all backgrounds and generations – a testament to our nation’s promise.”
