2026: A great year to get involved in action projects!

Transition Kamloops  January 14, 2026 at 8:31 pm

Have you been thinking of getting more involved in community projects in 2026? It just so happens that the Transition Kamloops core group members have been brewing up some new ideas. Roll up your sleeves and join us! (Share your ideas via this form, or sign up to discuss them at our upcoming Virtual Open House!)

These initiatives are already underway:

  • Improving bike parking infrastructure in our City: A lack of secure bike parking is consistently identified as a barrier to increased cycling, particularly in retail areas. Building on the success of our Climate Action Fests, we are planning an exciting one-day community workshop this spring. Working with partners, we plan to use a design-thinking approach to identify gaps, opportunities, priority actions, and next steps to increase the availability of secure bike parking. We’d love to have you join our organizing team!
  • Using the arts to bring emotional resonance to climate action: We’re planning a nature/climate poetry afternoon at the Kamloops Art Gallery in April. Get in touch if you’d like to be part of it!
  • Along the same lines, we are partnering with the CanGo Grannies and the Kamloops Naturalist Club to host a quirky fashion show this spring. Help appreciated!
  • Nature-friendly yards: We are rebooting this action team! The goal is to form neighbourhood-based teams to support households to make changes in their yards that enhance curb appeal, reduce water use, and support biodiversity. The project team will be reconstituted, so now is a great time to join.
  • Keeping fixable items out of the landfill: The highly successful Repair Cafe team will once again coordinate several one-day events this year, with the first one planned for March 12 at the TRU Makerspace. New “fixers”, event organizers, and day-of-event volunteers are always welcome.
  • Making gently-used clothes available at no cost to women and children: Clothing swaps are once again planned for spring and fall. Additional event helpers would be appreciated.
  • Advocating for more sustainable burial options: The Green Burial team will continue to advocate for lower-carbon options in City cemeteries and search for private landowners willing to dedicate some land to natural burials. Let us know if you’d like to be added to the volunteer list.
  • Exploring literature that sparks conversations on climate action, ecopsychology, systems change and social justice: We currently have one active book club, but if you’d like to help form another one, get in touch!

The following ideas have been suggested, but do not yet have active project teams. If you’d like to help lead these, let us know!

  • Learning about proposed AI datacentres for Kamloops and what impacts they might have
  • Installing neighbourhood bulletin boards where people can share hyperlocal news and opportunities for connection.
  • Organizing seasonal pop-up events where people can swap Halloween costumes and Christmas decorations.
  • Setting up informal vegetable stands in individual neighbourhoods to distribute excess seasonal produce.
  • Creating plant-based cooking groups that get together regularly to prepare batches of healthy, freezer-ready meals.
  • Building neighbourhood-based “resilience teams” that are ready to spring into action to protect vulnerable residents during extreme weather events or other emergencies.
  • Teaching kids (and maybe adult kids too?) how to grow vegetables

Which of these ideas catch your attention? Have you got a different idea you’d like to work on? We’d love to hear which initiatives have the most support: let us know by filling out this form!

In addition to sharing your ideas via the form, we’re hosting a Virtual Open House for Transition Kamloops supporters to share an overview of current initiatives and invite your input on priorities and opportunities for involvement. Mark Thursday, February 26th from 7 – 8:30 pm on your calendar. Pre-registration is required.

Transition Kamloops is 100% volunteer-based. We connect like-minded people to work on community projects they’re passionate about. The more active supporters we have, the more we can do! We can’t wait to hear your ideas and start working together to make Kamloops more connected and more resilient.

PS: We know the world feels a bit unsettled right now. Working together on a hands-on project within your own sphere of influence is a great way to regain a sense of balance and control.

Transition Kamloops is a volunteer-driven, registered not-for-profit society focused on increasing local resilience and self-sufficiency in food, water, energy, culture and wellness. We emphasize a local economy, healthy ecosystems, and grassroots community building, while reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. We believe in a better way: a community that sustains life in all its diversity, strives for equality and justice and invests in the future.

Transition Kamloops recognizes that we are living on Secwépemcul’ecw—land that was never ceded to settlers, and continues to be home to vibrant Indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions. We acknowledge the impact of colonization, forced displacement, and ongoing struggles faced by Indigenous peoples. We commit to listening, learning, and building positive relationships with Indigenous communities as we work towards reconciliation.
