NDP Statement on Mark Carney’s Pre-Budget Speech « Canada’s NDP

In reaction to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s pre-budget speech, NDP leader Don Davies issued the following statement:

“New Democrats are deeply concerned that Mark Carney is planning an austerity budget that will slash vital services and eliminate family-sustaining jobs.

His speech last night confirmed what many feared: Canadians who are struggling are being told to make “sacrifices.”

What’s clear is that he’s already handed a massive tax break to the wealthiest 0.13 percent. He refuses to tax the largest, most profitable corporations. And he cancelled the digital services tax on U.S. tech giants, all draining billions from public coffers.

At the same time, Canadian workers are facing soaring unemployment, sky-high prices, and weak economic growth. Cutting the services they rely on will only make things worse.

Expecting working families to shoulder the burden of Trump’s trade war while the wealthiest benefit from tax giveaways is not just unfair, it’s bad economic policy. A strong economy needs a skilled workforce, thriving communities and an equitable society.

New Democrats have been clear: Canadians need targeted investments to support working families squeezed by high prices, create good jobs, build affordable homes, and strengthen public healthcare.

It’s up to the Carney government to deliver them.
