Liberals comment on Carney-Trump meeting, possible revival of Keystone XL – October 8, 2025

Ministers and Liberal MPs speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal party holds its weekly caucus meeting.

Minister François-Philippe Champagne (finance) as well as MPs Nathaniel Erskine-Smith and Marc Miller comment on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s meeting in Washington on Tuesday with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Champagne also speaks about the Parliamentary Budget Office’s reaction to the government’s decision to move budget day from the spring to the fall.

Minister Steven Guilbeault (Canadian Identity and Culture) as well as MP Corey Hogan and Miller also face questions on reports that Prime Minister Carney discussed the possibility of reviving the Keystone XL pipeline in his meeting with President Trump.

Minister Sean Fraser (justice) and Lena Diab (immigration) are asked about Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner’s calls for restrictions on birthright citizenship.

Sean Fraser also comments on provincial reaction to the federal government’s recent submission 21 on limiting the use of the notwithstanding clause in the Supreme Court’s hearing on Quebec’s secularism law.

Ministers Patty Hajdu (jobs and families) and Steven MacKinnon (government House leader) are asked about the probe into Canada’s trucking sector over allegations of exploitative practices.

Minister Joanne Thompson (fisheries) is questioned on the decision to deny Marineland’s request to export the whales to China and MP Chris Bittle comments on the committee study of the Longest Ballot Committee.
