Scrap Liberal Bail—Pass the Jail Not Bail Act (C-242)

Dear Prime Minister,

Canadians deserve to feel safe in their homes, their parks, and on their streets. After years of Liberal “catch-and-release,” they don’t. Your government’s bail regime, anchored in Bill C-75’s “earliest opportunity, least restrictive conditions” rule, has turned repeat violent offenders back onto our streets again and again, with tragic and preventable consequences. Extortion is surging. Sexual assaults are up. Violent crime is up. Homicides are up. These are not abstractions; they are shattered families and grieving communities.

You promised to “act decisively” after the election to reverse Liberal bail. Six months later, nothing. No bill. No action. Meanwhile, Canadians continue to pay the price for Liberal laws that prioritize offenders over victims.

Conservatives have put a clear solution on the table: Arpan Khanna’s Jail Not Bail Act (C-242). Our bill would repeal the failed Liberal “principle of restraint,” toughen bail for major violent and organized crimes like extortion and home invasion, require judges to consider an accused’s criminal history, and stop prolific offenders from vouching for other criminals. It’s backed by frontline voices—including the Toronto Police Association and advocates speaking for victims like the family of Bailey McCourt. It will keep dangerous repeat offenders where they belong: behind bars.

You must immediately:

  1. Scrap Liberal bail. Acknowledge C-75 has failed and stop defending a status quo that endangers Canadians.
  2. Vote for our motion to pass C-242 without delay. Allow the House to move our bill rapidly so we can restore common-sense bail that protects victims and communities. If you will not support it, at least get out of the way and let Parliament do its job.

Canadians are not asking for more excuses, studies or photo-ops. They want action: Scrap Liberal bail and pass our bill. Do this, and we can begin restoring safe streets, peace of mind for families and justice for victims.

Sincerely,

The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, P.C., M.P.

Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada

Arpan Khanna, M.P.

Conservative National Outreach Chair
