Justice Minister Sean Fraser on free speech, bail reform, and Bill 21 court challenge

Canada’s Justice Minister and Attorney General, Sean Fraser, is defending his government’s latest legislative priorities and facing sharp criticism from multiple fronts. His proposed bill would criminalize intimidation and obstruction at places like schools, houses of worship, and community centres. But civil liberties groups warn it risks curbing free expression and criminalizing peaceful protest. Fraser is also preparing reforms to tighten bail, a move long demanded by provinces and conservatives. And at the Supreme Court, Ottawa is challenging Quebec’s Bill 21, reigniting debates over provincial powers and religious neutrality. Michael Serapio sits down with Minister Fraser to discuss these contentious issues.
