Liberals comment on November budget, bill to protect places of worship – September 17, 2025
Prime Minister Mark Carney, ministers and Liberal MPs speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal party holds its first weekly caucus meeting of the fall 2025 sitting of Parliament. The prime minister, minister François-Philippe Champagne (finance) and Mark MacKinnon (government House leader, transport) as well as MPs Judy Sgro and James Maloney face questions on the timing of the federal budget, which is set to be tabled in the House of Commons on November 4.
MacKinnon also comments on his new role as transport minister, which comes following the resignation of Chrystia Freeland from federal cabinet.
Additionally, Champagne discusses ongoing trade negotiations with the United States and the Bank of Canada’s decision to lower the interest rate to 2.5 per cent.
Minister Sean Fraser (justice) as well as MPs Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Anthony Housefather and Sameer Zuberi comment on an incoming piece of government legislation aimed at protecting individuals entering places of worship, religious or cultural institutions.
Minister Steven Guilbeault (identity and culture) is asked when the government intends to appoint a new special envoy on preserving Holocaust remembrance and combatting antisemitism following Deborah Lyons’ decision to leave the post three months before the end of her term.
Guilbeault and Housefather also comment on Radio Canada’s move to suspend one of its reporters over antisemitic comments that were made during a broadcast on Monday.
