Trump’s newest tariffs’ threats will hurt Canadian workers « Canada’s NDP

NDP leader Don Davies issued the following statement:

“Donald Trump’s latest threats are baseless, unfair and unacceptable. He’s determined to hurt our economy and workers. It’s clear Minister Carney’s moves to appease Trump aren’t working, because conceding to a bully never ends.

Trump’s reckless tariffs are already damaging our industries and he continues to attack our country, even though Mr. Carney has done everything he wants, from cancelling the digital services tax on multi-billion-dollar tech giants to negotiating entry into the Golden Dome and committing to the NATO 5 percent target. Mr. Carney promised “elbows up” during the election – Canadians expect him to keep that promise.

New Democrats renew our call on the Liberal government to stand strong against Donald Trump. We urge Mr. Carney to make no further unilateral concessions without a reciprocal benefit from the US. We call on him to protect our economy and workers by:

  • investing to build more of what we need in Canada and create good union paying jobs;
  • making a firm commitment to use Canadian content in all public infrastructure and incentivize the private sector to buy Canadian content with a Made-in-Canada tax credit;
  • encouraging Canadians to invest in Canada by launching Canada victory bonds;
  • improving Employment Insurance, especially for workers hit by tariff job losses;
  • stopping cuts to public services that Canadian need, particularly during a trade war with the United States;
  • accelerating trade diversification efforts, especially with Europe and Asia.

New Democrats will always stand up for Canadian workers and a strong, sovereign Canada.”
