NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

BC Conservative MLA attacks David Eby for reducing housing prices

June 17, 2025 at 3:11 pm  Politics, Provincial

BC Conservative Transportation critic Harman Bhangu is facing backlash online after attacking the BC NDP for bringing housing prices down at the expense of speculators. Bhangu wrote:

“You ride the SkyTrain through Metro Vancouver—cranes everywhere, condos coming fast. In Surrey Central area, units are now selling for less than pre-sale prices. Investors are trapped. Assignments are piling up. Eby made it worse by gutting short-term rentals—killing flexibility and pushing owners to sell. This isn’t housing policy. It’s economic sabotage.” – Harman Bhangu (June 16 2025)

Bhangu is crediting Eby for policies that increase housing supply and reduce prices – he just thinks that’s a bad thing because it hurts investors who are trying to flip pre-sale condos at a profit.

Here’s what people are saying:

“Wait. I thought we wanted more new housing units and lower home prices?” –Mo Amir

“One of their MLA’s is complaining about lower housing prices in Surrey due to increased supply. Do BC Conservatives really want housing to remain out of reach for young families forever?” –Mark Marissen

“‘Units selling for less’ is kind of the point – means housing prices are coming down. Sitting empty = more supply.” –Sarbjit Kaur

“The BC Conservatives’ true motives appear. They don’t care about small businesses or the majority of people. They want to benefit speculators.” –Ross Brown

“What a concept!  Housing for people, more so than for investors. Can’t see what the problem is.” –John Luton

Previously, when asked which parts of David Eby’s Housing Action Plan he would continue, Rustad said, “I would repeal all of that.” (CKNW, May 16 2024)

BC NDP Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon: “The BC Conservatives are once again defending speculators instead of British Columbians who are trying to afford a home. Our housing plan is making a difference, but the BC Conservatives are planning to repeal it because making housing more affordable is bad for speculators. We will continue to deliver more homes for people in Surrey and across the province.”
