NDP MLA Stephanie Higginson says funding for will help diversify economy, promote sustainability

LADYSMITH – BC NDP MLA Stephanie Higginson says that projects in Ladysmith – Oceanside will benefit from funding to promote economic diversification and sustainability in rural communities.
“Through REDIP, we’re empowering rural communities throughout B.C. to thrive and grow,” said Stephanie Higginson, MLA for Ladysmith – Oceanside. “Together we’re building a sustainable future in every corner of our province.”
The following projects in Ladysmith – Oceanside are receiving funding:
- Island Corridor Foundation – $1 million
- Project: The Ladysmith Historic Train Station Renovation and Refurbishment Project will renovate and refurbish the historic Ladysmith Train Station into a community hub for economic and social activation anchored by the Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Centre. The hub will offer networking opportunities for businesses, coworking and meeting spaces, and room for Indigenous and non-Indigenous artisans to display their work.
- Coast Salish Development Corporation – $374,063.30
- Project: Constructing a waterfront restaurant in the existing marina building at the Oyster Bay Marina in the Ladysmith Harbour, boosting the local economy and providing significant benefits for Stz’uminus.
- Community Futures Central Island –$95,886
- Project: Help small businesses in Central Vancouver Island learn Artificial Intelligence (AI) best practices and identify digital solutions to enhance resilience and productivity, driving local economic development and diversification.
This upskilling of small businesses will enable them to build a future-ready workforce, ensuring they can adapt to emerging technologies and remain competitive.

- Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce – $160,000
- Project: The Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce is undertaking a multifaceted initiative aimed at equipping local businesses and youth with essential skills and opportunities. This initiative will enhance business competitiveness, strengthen workforce development, prepare youth for career transition, support knowledge transfer and innovation, and foster sustainable economic growth.
- Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce – $83,164
- Project: The Qualicum Beach Chamber Incubation Space will provide dedicated an incubation space including office and storefront for startups, training programs, mentorship, and product development support for local businesses and entrepreneurs.
- Town of Ladysmith – $59,798
- Project: The Town of Ladysmith will undertake development of the Ladysmith Mountain Bike Trail Network Planning and Feasibility Study. The study will include trail assessment and mapping, an economic impact analysis and identification of companion improvements and programs.
More than 130 projects across B.C. are receiving a total of $43 million in funding this year from the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP). Projects are being led by local governments, First Nations, and not-for-profit organizations, and will create an estimated 1,200 jobs across the province.
