The notwithstanding clause and keeping mass-murderers in prison: Post-debate panel– April 17, 2025
During the campaign Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has said he will use the notwithstanding clause to defy Supreme Court of Canada rulings in order to push through his proposed legislation, which would allow judges to impose consecutive life sentences for people convicted of mass murder. Our post-debate panel weighs in on the implications of using the clause and whether the Conservatives have anything to gain electorally by making such a promise.
Watch our panel, hosted by Michael Serapio, with strategists Susan Smith (Liberal), Jordan Paquet (Conservative) and George Soule (NDP), as well with Dalhousie Political Science Professor Lori Turnbull.
