The Architects of the Crisis: Carney’s Liberal Housing Team

Same Liberal Team, Same Broken Promises

Ottawa, ON — Vancouver is the third most unaffordable housing market in the world behind Hong Kong and Sydney. Most young British Columbians and new immigrants have given up on the dream of home ownership. Mark Carney’s solution? Recruit the arsonists who lit the fire.

Over the last decade, the Liberals have doubled rent, doubled the needed down-payment, doubled mortgage payments—now they are doubling down on the same failed Liberal team and broken Liberal promises.

Mark Wiens – Vancouver East

At the same time Vancouver’s housing market was ranked impossibly unaffordable, Liberal candidate Mark Wiens, a luxury realtor in Vancouver East, bragged about marketing homes to wealthy foreign buyers to inflate prices. “As a Caucasian, Chinese speaking realtor born in Vancouver, I’ll be able to uniquely market your home to an invitation-only audience of 5,000 VIP luxury buyers in China,” he said.

Gregor Robertson – Vancouver Fraserview—South Burnaby

Carney’s star candidate Gregor Robertson, the failed former mayor of Vancouver, saw home prices increase by 149% and raised housing taxes by 141% in just ten years. In December 2008, the first month Gregor Robertson was mayor, the average price of a home in Vancouver was $477,500. When he left, buying that same house cost nearly $1.2 million.

Taleeb Noormohamed – Vancouver—Granville

Local real estate speculator and Vancouver—Granville Liberal candidate Taleeb Noormohamed flipped 41 homes, netting $4.9 million from his favourite side hustle—driving up housing prices in the process. When confronted with his hypocrisy, he courageously blamed his parents.

The failed Liberal record speaks for itself. In the last decade:

  • Home prices increased from $448,000 to over $720,500
  • Asking rents doubled, $973 to $1,852 for a 1-bedroom
  • Mortgage payments doubled, $1,400 to $2,800
  • Nearly 60% of pre-tax median household income now goes to housing
  • It takes 25 years to save for a down payment in Canada’s biggest cities
  • 8 in 10 Canadians believe homeownership is just for the rich

Carney’s housing plan is Justin Trudeau’s failed strategy with a new slogan.

More government programs. More gatekeepers. More of the same failed promises.

We can’t afford a fourth Liberal term. It’s time for a new Conservative government who will build affordable homes for a change.
