New active transportation projects in Langford make school commutes safer
LANGFORD – BC NDP MLA Ravi Parmar says students in south Langford will soon be able to walk, run, or roll to their new school, SĆIȺNEW̱ SṮEȂLİṮḴEȂL, scheduled to open in September 2025. The Province is making a major investment to support active transportation infrastructure, including new sidewalks and protected bike lanes, to support safer commutes for students.
Langford is receiving $1 million for two projects to improve active transportation along Latoria Road:
- Phase 1A – 340 metres of sidewalks, buffered and protected bike lanes that will provide active transportation routes to the new SĆIȺNEW̱ SṮEȽIṮḴEȽ Elementary School
- Phase 1B – Approximately 300 metres of sidewalks, buffered and protected bike lanes that will provide active transportation routes to the new SĆIȺNEW̱ SṮEȽIṮḴEȽ Elementary School
“This is big news for Langford and a project I’ve been working on for many years. When the new SĆIȺNEW̱ SṮEȂLİṮḴEȂL Elementary School opens, I want to ensure that students living nearby have a safe way to get to school. Kids deserve safe and accessible commutes,” said Ravi Parmar, MLA for Langford-Highlands. “Now that the funding is secured, I’m hopeful the City of Langford and the CRD will do everything in their power to move this project through every approval stage so we can get construction underway in time for the school’s opening.”
Across B.C., 62 projects and network plans are moving forward thanks to $24 million in cost-shared provincial funding.
The Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants program funds Indigenous, local, and regional governments with cost-sharing investments of up to $500,000 for infrastructure projects and as much as $50,000 in funding to develop active transportation network plans.
These grants support projects that help improve connections to employment, education, transit, and recreational centres around the province, helping people use active transportation options safely and efficiently in their communities.
