NDP announces plan to cut taxes for working and middle-class families, not millionaires and billionaires « Canada’s NDP

HAMILTON – Today, Jagmeet Singh announced a plan to put more money in the pockets of the people who need it most—working and middle-class Canadians, families struggling to make ends meet, seniors, and people with disabilities.

The NDP’s plan would save families over $1,450 a year by cutting taxes and permanently removing the GST from daily essentials.

“Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre are offering different versions of the same thing: a better deal for the wealthiest few,” said Singh. “While the Liberals and Conservatives promise tax cuts for millionaires, we’re focused on helping the people who actually need it—families trying to get by, workers squeezed by higher costs, and people directly hit by Donald Trump’s tariffs.”

Both the Liberals and Conservatives are promising income tax cuts that give the biggest break to people making over $250,000 a year. The capital gains tax giveaway adds up to $17.4 billion—a windfall for people who make over $1.4 million per year. That means people making over $5 million a year get over half a million dollars back, while everyone else is left behind.

“There’s a storm on the horizon,” said Singh. “When Donald Trump comes for Canada again, Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre will protect billionaires—just like they always have. And it’ll cost you. The NDP will fight so working and middle-class Canadians don’t get stuck with the bill.”

The NDP plan will:

  • Cut taxes for workers and families by raising the basic personal amount to $19,500—putting $505 back in the pockets of those earning between $19,500 and $177,882.
  • Permanently remove the GST from essentials like grocery store meals, diapers and strollers, plus monthly bills including cell, internet and heating bills. We estimate this will save a family of four $448 per year.
  • Reverse the Carney/Poilievre capital gains tax cut—a $17.4 billion handout to the wealthiest 0.13%
  • Double the Canada Disability Benefit, helping low-income people with disabilities live with dignity.
  • Lift all seniors out of poverty by raising the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS).

“Families are already doing everything right—and still falling behind,” said Singh. “Now with Trump threatening more tariffs, things could get even worse. We won’t let that happen. New democrats are in it for you, not the ultra-rich.”
