Jagmeet Singh reacts to Trump’s tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum « Canada’s NDP

Canada’s NDP leader Jagmeet Singh issued the following statement:

“Today, Donald Trump’s trade war hits Canadian steel and aluminum with 25 per cent tariffs. Thousands of Canadian jobs are at stake and workers are worried about whether they’ll be able to keep putting food on the table. Trump’s an economic arsonist, and in his attempt to burn down our house, he’s doing the same to the American economy.

In this moment, Canada must stand together – if we are united, we cannot lose. Our goal has to be to protect and lift up workers. We can build, build, build using Canadian steel and aluminum, Canadian lumber and Canadian workers. And we can and must fix Canada’s EI system so every worker – including contractors – have security.

I’m disappointed that Mark Carney has said not one word on getting support to workers or fixing EI. Not one word about building the jobs we need here at home by requiring federal projects to use 100 percent Canadian steel. Cuts for workers and tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy will not help workers.

Together, Canada can and will win. Resist. Unite. Persist.”
