Poilievre to End Sneaky ‘Carney Loophole’ And Force Leaders to Disclose Finances

March 7, 2025 at 6:46 am  Federal, Politics

Poilievre will require leadership candidates disclose their finances within 30 days, publish them within 60 days, and require all future Prime Ministers and Ministers sell assets that create conflicts of interest.

Toronto, ON—Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre announced today that he will amend the Conflict of Interest Act to remove the ‘Carney loophole’ so that all party leadership candidates must disclose their financial holdings to the Ethics Commissioner within 30 days of becoming an official candidate and make them publicly available to Canadians within 60 days. He will also require all future Prime Ministers and Ministers sell assets that create conflicts of interest to stop politicians from ever using political office for their own benefit.

The move comes after Mark Carney sneakily exploited a loophole in the Conflict of InterestAct and refused to disclose his finances and assets to Canadians, even though he could become Prime Minister in just a few days. This ‘Carney Loophole’ could allow him to become Prime Minister for four months without ever having to tell Canadians about his financial interests, even though they may oppose the interests of working Canadians.

“How could Carney negotiate with Trump if he sneakily still has shares in a U.S.-headquartered company?” Poilievre asked. “How could Carney support Canadian energy if it would compete with his foreign energy interests? How could he save jobs when one of his companies is laying off 1000 workers to pay out shareholders? Canadians deserve to know whether their Prime Minister is working against their best interests for their own profit.”

Poilievre pointed out that Mark Carney could do the right thing and disclose his assets now, but he has sneakily refused to do so. As a result, Carney could be Prime Minister for months – making vital economic, regulatory, national security and international trade decisions – and then ask millions of Canadians to vote for him, before anyone knows who is pulling his financial strings.

Already, Carney’s numerous conflicts of interest have become apparent. Carney supported Justin Trudeau’s decision to kill Canadian pipeline projects while he sneakily invested in pipelines in Latin America and the Middle East. Carney also decided to move his company’s headquarters and Canadian jobs to Donald Trump’s hometown of New York City just six days after the US administration first threatened unjustified tariffs on Canada. He even let one of his companies fire 1,000 workers to boost shareholder profits while he was waxing lyrical about saving Canadian jobs.

“I will end the sneaky Carney Loophole. I will put Canadians back in charge of their government and bring home power to the people,” said Poilievre. “I will ensure that our leaders work for you, not for themselves.”

Only Common Sense Conservatives will make sure our leaders put Canada First. Let’s bring home accountability.
