NDP wants to see better wages for child care workers, creating more spots for kids « Canada’s NDP

NDP Families, Children, and Social Development critic Leah Gazan made the following statement in reaction to the extension of $10-a-day child care:

“Working parents need more available, affordable child care spaces – that’s a fact. The NDP is very pleased to see $10-a-day child care extended, but we know that a huge part of getting kids into day care is making sure we have workers to care for them.

Early childhood education is important, challenging and future-building work. We need to treat those workers properly with better wages and working conditions — otherwise, we’re dooming parents to keep hunting for care, making little progress on wait lists and paying far more.

Justin Trudeau let families down today by not even mentioning better working conditions, livable wages, benefits or pensions for workers who we literally trust with our kids’ lives.

Both Pierre Poilievre and Mark Carney have vowed to make deep cuts to services, and that puts $10-a-day child care on chopping block. That could cost parents another $8,500 a year.

New Democrats made affordable child care a reality after the Liberals spent decades making and breaking promises on it. An NDP government will also make sure more affordable child care spots open up so more parents can build their best life.”
