KAMLOOPS—As digital attacks become increasingly common and complex, there is a growing need for cybersecurity professionals to keep personal and business computer systems secure. Those who are interested in starting or shifting into a career in the cybersecurity industry can gain in-demand professional skills in just two years through a new diploma in Computer Network and Cybersecurity at Thompson Rivers University (TRU).

With students accepted in September 2025, the new program offers specialized education from expert faculty in innovative facilities featuring the latest technologies in the industry. TRU’s practical, lab-based curriculum, strong focus on industry certifications and co-operative learning opportunities give students real-world experience. The cohort-based approach emphasizes hands-on, applied learning based on realistic challenges.

“This program will prepare high quality graduates in cybersecurity with strong foundations in the discipline and professional skills, thus fulfilling the education and training needs of the region while supporting an area of high labour demand in our province,” said Dr. Greg Anderson, dean of the Faculty of Science.

Network and Cybersecurity Diploma graduates will be equipped with the technical expertise, problem-solving skills and ethical foundations to excel in a career in maintaining, securing and managing networks, systems and workstations while protecting vital digital infrastructures. Career options span major industries, from information technology, finance and telecommunications to manufacturing, health care and transportation.

“TRU is renowned for its co-operative education placements with dedicated industry partners. The Computer Science department offers practical, career-oriented degree programs that prepare graduates to meet the demands of the real world. In line with this, the diploma program provides students with hands-on learning experiences, including practical capstone projects and co-op placements in cybersecurity,” said Associate Professor Musfiq Rahman, chair of the Department of Computing Science.

Program graduates are prepared for industry-recognized certifications such as CompTIA A+, Certified Ethical Hacking and Security Certified Practitioner and are able to easily transition into TRU’s Bachelor of Computing Science degree program.
