The NDP says it’s time to invest more in affordable, social and community housing « Canada’s NDP

MONTREAL—As Canadians face economic uncertainty with American President Donald Trump’s tariff threats — which could cause job losses and a recession — the NDP joined the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (CHRA) to commit to invest in the construction of deeply affordable housing and create jobs.

On Tuesday, the NDP also committed to a massive public infrastructure building program to protect and create jobs — which would build homes, employ construction and trades workers, and protect jobs in industries like steel and aluminum.

“People are cutting back and they may need to cut back more. We need to take this opportunity to invest more to create good jobs, but also to build and renovate the housing we need,” said Housing critic Alexandre Boulerice. “Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre want to rely solely on wealthy real estate developers. The NDP believes that we must invest in affordable and social housing so that people can afford a home. Not for the profits of corporate landlords.”

In its report released earlier this month, the CHRA called for more government action to help people, create jobs and improve overall productivity. The NDP supports these goals and an NDP government will get to work immediately to achieve them.

“Under the Liberals, housing prices doubled and we’re losing more affordable housing than we’re building. And now, with Trump’s threats, renters will find themselves even more squeezed considering everything will cost more and there will be job losses,” added Boulerice. “A housing plan that includes measures to renovate and build affordable, social and community housing; measures to protect renters and invest in Indigenous Housing Collaborative is not only meeting the needs of people, but is also a path to economic recovery.”
