NDP statement on Bell Canada’s workforce reduction plan « Canada’s NDP

NDP labour critic MP Matthew Green (Hamilton Centre) and NDP Canadian heritage critic MP Niki Ashton (Churchill—Keewatinook Aski) made the following joint statement:

“New Democrats strongly condemn Bell’s workforce reduction plan – this is corporate greed at its worst.

For far too long, Canada’s telecom giants have been putting shareholders before their workers, continuing to outsource jobs and jack up telecom prices on Canadians. Instead of outsourcing Canadian jobs, Bell should be investing in Canada. For the past ten years, the Liberals allowed telecom companies’ greed to run rampant while subsidizing their profits with public dollars. Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives would just encourage a Bay Street First approach, promoting a strategy that maximizes profits at the expense of workers and Canadians. As New Democrats, we say enough is enough. An NDP government would use existing tools like the CRTC to hold Bell to account.

The NDP is the only party standing up for Canadians against corporate greed and we would bring in consequences for telecom companies, like ending federal contracts, for showing Canadian workers the door and cutting off their livelihood for a profit.”
