Reality Check – Chrystia Freeland Flip-Flops on Grocery Price Cap « Canada’s NDP

Chrystia Freeland had her chance to stand up to grocers and put a price cap on groceries – but she chose not to.

In June 2024, the NDP put forward a motion in the House that would have put a price cap on groceries. But Chrystia Freeland, the Minister of Finance, instructed Liberals to vote against it.

Despite promising that her government “would do everything in [their] power to make sure prices stabilize”, Freeland chose not to implement a price cap when she was the Minister of Finance.

Freeland is doing what Liberals do best: when they’re desperate for your vote, they promise to lower prices and get tough on billionaires. But when they get in government, they cave to big business and corporate greed.

Only New Democrats are truly committed to a price cap on groceries and standing up to billionaires. Chrystia Freeland and Mark Carney will cave to their demands – just like they always do.
