KAMLOOPS — Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is hosting a free workshop for female and non-binary high-school students in grades 8-12 who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The workshop involves creating a working robot and touring the TRU Makerspace.

Students get an overview of engineering, including the TRU program, and career talks by current TRU female engineering students, faculty and alumni. The workshop takes place on the Kamloops campus in Old Main (OM 1791) on Saturday, March 1, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

“Engineering offers incredible diversity and opportunities that often go unnoticed,” says Dr. Catherine Tatarniuk, an assistant teaching professor in the engineering department at TRU. “I’m excited to engage with high-school students, sharing my experiences to highlight the thrilling career paths engineering can offer.”

Students will:

  • Construct and code small robots
  • Explore virtual reality (VR) equipment
  • Make buttons and stickers
  • Test podcasting skills
  • Hear from alumni
  • Learn about different engineering disciplines

Lunch is included.
