Mayors join finance minister to discuss, share feedback on landmark tax

  • There has been an ongoing discussion about the infiltration of gangs, violence and increased criminal activity in schools in Victoria.
  • On Sept. 17, 2024, the former minister of education and child care issued an administrative directive to the board of education of School District No. 61 (Greater Victoria), requiring the board to submit a proactive, co-ordinated safety plan to the minister for approval. 
  • The board submitted a safety plan on Nov. 15, 2024.
  • After careful consideration, the safety plan was not approved by the minister.
  • On Dec. 5, 2024, the minister appointed Kevin Godden as special adviser to assist the board in revising the safety plan and in developing an implementation plan.
  • On Jan. 3, 2025, the special adviser sent a letter to the minister, stating that he was unable to fulfil his requirements based on a series of actions taken by the board that had compromised his ability to assist them.
  • On Jan. 5, 2025, the board submitted multiple safety plans.
  • On Jan. 10, 2025, the special adviser submitted his report to the minister.
  • In 2016, both the Vancouver School Board and the North Okanagan Shuswap board were dismissed, and official trustees were appointed in their places.

Sherri Bell was the president of Camosun College from 2015 until her retirement in early 2022. Prior to that, she worked in the Greater Victoria School District for 20 years, serving in various senior administrative capacities, including superintendent of schools/chief executive officer. Success and support for all students has been the primary focus in every aspect of her educational career.

Bell was appointed chair of the BC Transit Board of Directors in April 2023. She is also the chair of board for Whitecliffe College Canada. She has also served as the board chair of the British Columbia Council for International Education and chair of British Columbia Colleges. Recently, Bell was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for her service to public education and the community.
