Liberal Leadership Contenders Must Oppose Trudeau’s Plans To Stack Senate

Ottawa, ON – After nine years, the NDP-Liberal Government has never been less accountable. Today, Canadians discovered that in the days before Justin Trudeau will resign from office, he is planning to stack the Senate with well-connected Liberal Party insiders and his personal friends.

If Justin Trudeau cared about our democracy, he would wait until after a general election when the Canadian people have given a democratic mandate to a new government. But instead, Trudeau is planning on filling ten Senate vacancies with Liberal partisans who won’t have to retire until they’re 75.

Liberal leadership contenders must immediately speak out against this attempt by this lame-duck Prime Minister to stack the Senate with his preferred candidates just before he departs office. They must also commit to not filling any Senate vacancies themselves until Canadians have the opportunity to give a democratic mandate to a new government in a general election.

This is just another instance of classic Liberal Party arrogance that Canadians have become used to after nine years of their government. The last thing Canadians need is more lame-duck Senators tied to Justin Trudeau who pretend to be independent.

Instead of continuing to hide from the media, Carbon Tax Carney must immediately tell Canadians whether he will oppose Trudeau’s lame-duck appointments in the Senate. If he is not on Team Trudeau, he will say publicly that these new appointments should wait until after a new government receives a democratic mandate from Canadians.

Canadians deserve a carbon tax election now so that they can vote to restore the promise of Canada and axe the tax, build the homes, fix the budget and stop the crime.
