Federal cabinet retreat: Reaction to U.S. tariff threat – January 21, 2025

Ministers address the media in Montebello, Que., on the final day of a two day meeting of the federal cabinet. Facing questions on the proposed federal response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threat against Canada are Ministers François-Philippe Champagne (innovation), Mary Ng (trade) and Steven Guilbeault (environment) as well as Kirsten Hillman, Canada’s ambassador to the United States. Guilbeault also announces his endorsement of Mark Carney for leadership of the Liberal party. Guilbeault reacts to U.S. President Trump’s executive order to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement.

Also speaking with reporters are members of the Prime Minister’s Council on Canada-U.S. Relations: Hassan Yussuff, Jean Charest, Stephen Macneil, Arlene Dickinson, Wes Hall, Tabatha Bull and Flavio Volpe.
