OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada is pleased to announce Simon Guthrie as the new Critic for Democratic Reform in the Shadow Cabinet. With a rich background in both innovation and community leadership, Simon brings a unique perspective to this critical portfolio.

Simon’s professional journey began with a Master of Science in Physics, leading to a successful decade-long career in optics and digital cinema, where he earned several patents and accolades. However, his passion for addressing societal challenges prompted a pivot toward social and community-oriented work.

Simon pursued a Master’s degree in Peace and Conflict Studies at Conrad Grebel University College, where his research focused on the resilience and creativity of Waterloo Region’s faith communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. His findings underscored the power of collective action in overcoming adversity.

As a candidate, volunteer, and advocate for equity, Simon has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to democratic engagement. His relational and evidence-based approach will guide his work in fostering transparent, inclusive, and accountable governance, with a focus on amplifying the voices of communities often excluded from political decision-making.

“I am thrilled to support Simon Guthrie as our candidate in Waterloo and to announce his appointment to the Green Party of Canada’s Shadow Cabinet as our Critic for Democratic Reform,” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May. “Simon’s dedication to strengthening his community and his vision for a fairer Canada make him an outstanding leader for Waterloo and for our country.”

Simon Guthrie expressed enthusiasm for his new role: “I am excited to contribute to building a more democratic and just society as Critic for Democratic Reform. I look forward to working collaboratively with communities across Canada to create systems that better reflect their needs and aspirations.”

As Critic for Democratic Reform, Simon Guthrie will lead efforts to enhance electoral systems, strengthen community engagement, and promote equitable representation at all levels of government.
