A Fall Hike to Moul Falls
On a late fall day we hiked to Moul Falls in Wells Gray Provincial Park. From the parking lot, we hiked 3.3 km through the forest and by the creek to the brink of the falls. Paperbark birch, trembling aspen, spruce, and douglas fir trees are found in a mixed forest along the route.
A double track angles toward Grouse Creek, then a single track follows the creek downstream.
The trail ends at a steep stairway to the bottom of the canyon below the falls. At the bottom, spray from the falls coats everything.
A narrow trail goes behind the falls and into a lava cave beyond. The route in and out is a damp one.
From the cave on the far side we can look back at the falls. Mosses and lichens cover all the rocks, in the continuously-misted canyon.
The hike is an out-and-back route following Grouse Creek back to the double track.
It is a moderate hike along the final part of the trail to the trailhead, a 6.6 km route.
We have hiked this route in spring when the creek thunders over the lava cliffs and in winter when the falls freezes over. Fall provides a different experience, with few people, colorful foliage, and a quiet trail.
