Ministers comment on U.S. election, privilege debate, Brampton temple protests – November 5, 2024
Ministers speak briefly with reporters on Parliament Hill before the federal cabinet holds its weekly meeting. Mélanie Joly (foreign affairs), François-Philippe Champagne (innovation), Marc Miller (immigration), Mary Ng (trade) and Karina Gould (government House leader) face questions on today’s U.S. presidential election and the impact it may have on Canada-U.S. relations.
Gould and and Steven MacKinnon (labour) comment on the negotiations between parties to end the Conservative party’s ongoing privilege debate over obtaining government documents pertaining to Sustainable Development Technology Canada.
MacKinnon also responds to questions on the continuing negotiations to avert a strike by Canada Post workers ahead of the holiday season.
Arif Virani (justice) discusses the final report by Kimberly Murray, the Independent Special Interlocutor for Missing Children and Unmarked Graves and Burial Sites associated with Indian Residential Schools.
Harjit Sajjan (emergency preparedness), Kamal Khera (diversity, inclusion), Anita Anand (transport, Treasury Board president) and Gary Anandasangaree (Crown–Indigenous relations) comment on Monday’s counterdemonstration at the Hindu Sabha Mandir temple in Brampton, Ontario. This comes following a protest that turned violent outside of the temple on Sunday.
Steven Guilbeault (environment) and Jonathan Wilkinson (natural resources) face questions on the federal government’s plan to limit greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector. The draft rules will require the sector to cut emissions 35% below 2019 levels.
