Student mentors others as a way to give back
From everyone to whom much was given, much will be expected — this classic saying has been a guiding light for Adam Toor (BBA ’23), who considers himself a product of incredible mentors that generously gave their time to him. “Now, I believe it’s my turn to give back and pass on the lessons I’ve learned,” he says.
Currently in his second year at TRU’s Faculty of Law, Toor’s academic and professional accomplishments, combined with his passion for mentorship, have made him a role model for others. His mentorship work began during his undergraduate studies, when he held roles as a tutor, peer academic coach and supplemental learning leader.
In 2023, Toor graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, majoring in human resource management. In addition to being named valedictorian, he was awarded the TRU Medal in Business Administration for achieving the highest grade-point average of his graduating class.
He says his time at the Bob Gaglardi School of Business and Economics (TRU Gaglardi) is why he chose to pursue law school at TRU. “The smaller class sizes, close-knit interaction and accessibility to my professors made my undergraduate education truly unique, and I saw those same qualities at TRU’s Faculty of Law. The world-class professors and collegial, supportive environment here cemented my decision to spend the next three years at this law school,” he says.
“We are incredibly proud of Adam for his remarkable achievements and his dedication to giving back to our university. His efforts have significantly enriched our programs and have set a stellar example for his peers,” says Dr. Michael Henry, dean of TRU Gaglardi.
From student to teacher
At the invitation of Professor Murray Sholty, Toor recently shared his insights with students in two undergraduate courses: Introduction to Business and Environmental Law. Drawing on his academic experience and professional journey, he gave students strategies for excelling in academics, emphasizing the importance of discipline and perseverance as well as tips on applying to and thriving at law school.
“Adam embodies the university’s spirit of mentorship, community service and student support, making him a valuable role model for students across faculties,” Sholty says. “Adam’s success is driven by his exceptional determination, discipline and ambition. While he had the option to attend any law school in Canada, Adam chose TRU Law because of the values he observed both here and at the Bob Gaglardi School of Business and Economics.”
Excellence in action
Toor’s drive for excellence also shines through in his professional life. This past summer, while working at Dentons’ Vancouver office — one of the world’s largest law firms — he was awarded the prestigious Dentons 1L Fellowship for Business Law. Due to his contributions, he has been invited to return for his 2L summer articles next year.
“His dedication exemplifies the values we uphold and inspires future generations of students to strive for excellence and contribute meaningfully to our university,” says Faculty of Law Dean Dr. Daleen Millard.
