Canada’s NDP leader Jagmeet Singh issued the following statement:

“As Jewish families and neighbours gather to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, we reflect on its themes of renewal, hope, and community.

This year’s Rosh Hashanah arrives as Jewish communities prepare to mark the chilling one-year anniversary of the October 7 terrorist attacks on Israel, and the violence and grief stalking Jewish families continues to escalate. This past year has been difficult for Jewish communities, here at home and abroad. Some families will see the new year begin while a loved one is still being held hostage. The rise of antisemitic attacks on synagogues, schools, community centres and cemeteries have left families holding their loved ones close, reliving trauma that has echoed through generations. Jewish families right here in Canada have faced a painfully sharp rise in antisemitic hate crimes, leaving them feel unsafe in their own neighbourhood.

As we enter this New Year, let us commit to working together to build a Canada that reflects the Jewish values of compassion and understanding. Let’s work together to build communities where everyone is safe to practise their faith and celebrate their traditions without fear. Let’s commit to action to make Jewish people safe in Canada, in schools, in synagogues and everywhere.

On behalf of New Democrats, I wish everyone a sweet year filled with peace, health, and happiness.

Shana tova u’metukah!
