NORTH VANCOUVER – Bowinn Ma, BC New Democrat MLA for North Vancouver – Lonsdale and Minister for Emergency Management and Climate Readiness presented the King Charles III Coronation Medal to four local citizens today during a ceremony at the Polygon Gallery.

“It was an honour and privilege to nominate these worthy members of our community for the King Charles III Medal in recognition for their contributions to North Vancouver and beyond,” said MLA Ma, “Our province is a better place for people in our communities because of these recipients, and I’m so grateful for their leadership, dedication, and their shared goal of making the world a kinder, safer place.”

Darrell Mussatto, Elder Xele’milh-Doris Paul, and Massoud Karimaei are the local recipients of this honour, while Mike Danks, head of North Shore Rescue, received the Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness Coronation Medal.

Darrell Mussatto spearheaded many projects across North Vancouver, such as the Shipyards ice rink and the Green Necklace scenic loop, which stand as vibrant testaments to his dedication to sustainability and community well-being.

Elder Xele’milh-Doris Paul is a Squamish Nation leader and residential school survivor, who has made profound contributions to community safety and reconciliation, driving initiatives that honor Indigenous culture and advocate for the well-being of youth and women.

Massoud Karimaei is the founder of the Society of Iranian Canadian Professionals of British Columbia, and has empowered Iranian professionals and enriched British Columbia’s cultural landscape through his dedication to preserving and promoting Persian calligraphy and art.

Mike Danks revolutionized search and rescue operations through his leadership, introducing advanced technologies and mental health initiatives that have made the organization a global leader in lifesaving efforts.

They have all played a part in making the North Shore an amazing place to live, and have built legacies that will continue that effort for generations to come.

The Coronation Medal, a Canadian honour created to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, was launched by Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and recognizes those who have made significant contributions to Canada and their home province. The medal will be awarded to 30,000 deserving individuals across the country and is the first Canadian honour to mark a coronation.
