Leaders share stories of challenges in an ever-changing world
KAMLOOPS — Thompson Rivers University (TRU) invites the community to an evening of personal and professional stories from two women who are leading equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) initiatives in Canada’s post-secondary landscape.

Acclaimed scholars Dr. Malinda S. Smith and Dr. Dru Marshall sit down for a fireside chat with TRU Provost and Vice-President Academic Dr. Gillian Balfour at TRU’s third annual Women in Leadership event. Everyone is welcome to attend this event on Tuesday, Sept. 24, for a candid conversation with these influential women about their leadership experiences, challenges and successes.
Smith is the University of Calgary’s inaugural vice-provost and associate vice-president research (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, or EDI), and professor of political science. She has over three decades of post-secondary leadership, research, teaching, service and community engagement in EDI, and her work has been recognized with multiple awards. She is co-author of The Equity Myth: Racialization and Indigeneity at Canadian Universities, the first comprehensive, data-based study of racialized and Indigenous faculty members’ experiences in Canadian universities.
Dr. Dru Marshall
Recognized by the Women’s Executive Network as one of Canada’s Top 100 most powerful women in 2016, Marshall transformed the University of Calgary’s EDI and Indigenization initiatives during her two terms as provost and vice-president academic. She recently started a leadership consulting company, working with post-secondary institutions across North America. Marshall credits her prior coaching experience in high performance sport for helping shape her executive leadership style.
“I am honoured to be asked to come to the Women in Leadership 2024 event at TRU, and to continue the great tradition of leaders that have come before us. I will be speaking from the perspective of both a high performance coach and university leader, and look forward to sharing stories about my personal leadership journey,” says Marshall.
