OTTAWA – The Green Party of Canada is pleased to announce the results of the recent vote regarding the Party’s leadership structure. The vote was conducted to determine whether the Party should explore transitioning to a co-leadership model or maintain the current single-leader system.

The results of the vote are as follows:

  • Green: I am not opposed to moving to some form of co-leadership model – 75.6%
  • Red: I am opposed to moving away from our current single-leader model – 24.4%

With these results, it is evident that a strong majority of the voters are open to considering a co-leadership model. This outcome marks a significant moment in the evolution of the Green Party of Canada, reflecting a growing interest in more inclusive and collaborative leadership structures.

Interim Executive Director Jon Irwin commented on the results: “The overwhelming support for exploring a co-leadership model demonstrates our members’ commitment to innovation and inclusivity within our party. This vote is not just about leadership; it’s about ensuring that our party reflects the values we stand for – democracy, collaboration, and equality. We are excited to engage with our members in the upcoming discussions to shape the future of our party.”

As the next step, the Federal Council will convene to schedule a Special General Meeting (SGM) in the upcoming months. During the SGM, members will have the opportunity to evaluate different co-leadership models and discuss the path forward. This will be a crucial moment for all members to participate in shaping the future of the party’s leadership structure.

Further details regarding the SGM, including dates, format, and participation methods, will be communicated  in the coming weeks. The Green Party of Canada encourages all members to engage in this important process.
