Canada’s NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“Today, New Democrats remember the horrific violence committed against Tamils in Sri Lanka. Forty-one years ago, numerous mobs carried out pogroms against the Tamil community across the country, leading to a decades long civil war. Tamils have suffered a genocide and New Democrats reiterated our call for the United Nations to establish an independent investigation into genocide against Tamils so the community can have the accountability and justice they deserve.

Black July is an unforgettable chapter of history for so many, and many families still feel the impact today. New Democrats join those mourning on this painful day and commit to never forgetting these events so it doesn’t happen again.

The dark stain of Sri Lanka’s history is a reminder that we all need to stand for peace, justice and to never turn a blind eye against hate and division. We all have a collective responsibility to prevent genocides from happening again and working towards honouring those lives lost.”
