SAANICH – BC NDP MLAs Lana Popham and Murray Rankin say grants for local not-for-profits will support sports organizations so that people can stay active and healthy in Oak Bay and Saanich.

“Local sports organizations are part of what make our cities and towns into vibrant communities” said Lana Popham, MLA for Saanich South. “These local organizations work hard to keep us active at any age and I’m glad that we’re able to continue supporting their efforts to make our days brighter.”

$811,760 in funding to 29 organizations in Oak Bay and Saanich is part of the $25 million in Ministry of Municipal Affairs Community Gaming Grants that will be shared among 736 organizations that deliver sports programs or services across BC that will improve the quality of life in their communities.

Some of the organizations receiving funding in Oak Bay and Saanich include:

  • $110,000 – Pacific Coast Swimmers and Parents Association
  • $94,680 – Bays United Football Club
  • $59,500 – Rowing British Columbia
  • $50,000 – Swim B.C.

“Being involved in sports is important for so many families, it is often where kids learn about teamwork, resiliency, and the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” says Murray Rankin, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head. “With these grants, our local sports organizations can expand their programming and keep our community connected and active.”

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs Community Gaming Grants Program distributes up to $140 million worth of grants annually to not-for-profit organizations across British Columbia that improve and enrich the lives of people and communities.
