BC NDP MLAs Susie Chant and Bowinn Ma say grant will help speed up delivery of homes in North Vancouver
NORTH VANCOUVER – BC NDP MLAs Susie Chant and Bowinn Ma says that new homes will be approved faster in North Vancouver thanks to a grant for the local government to create a more efficient development approvals process.
“This funding is a testament to our commitment to meet the growing housing needs of our communities,” says Susie Chant, MLA for North Vancouver – Seymour. “With this program, North Vancouver District will be more able to implement best practices and innovative development approval solutions, which will benefit everyone living and working in our community.”
The District of North Vancouver received a grant of $150,000.00 as part of the Local Government Development Approvals Program (LGPAD).
The program encourages local governments to explore innovative approaches to improve development approval processes, from the pre-application phase to the issuance of the building permit.
“This initiative represents an important step forward in addressing housing needs across British Columbia, and right here in North Vancouver,” says Bowinn Ma, MLA for North Vancouver – Lonsdale. “Too often, housing initiatives are slowed down by complicated or outdated development processes, which negatively impacts our community members, our local businesses, and local governments. By streamlining development approvals, we’re not just speeding up the delivery of homes; we’re also promoting innovation and efficiency within local governments.”
This year the New Democrat government is providing approximately $4.4 million for 37 local governments around B.C. to participate in this program through UBCM.
This is the second intake for LGPAD, an application-based grant fund administered by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. To date, this program has provided approximately $19 million to help local governments implement best practices and test innovative approaches to improve development approval processes while meeting planning and policy objectives.
The program will support the government’s Homes for People action plan to unlock more homes, faster.
