NDP National Defence critic Lindsay Mathyssen (London-Fanshawe) issued the following statement:

“Today, on Canadian Armed Forces Day, New Democrats want to express our deep gratitude to all the men and women who serve our country and those who have served in the past. Those in the Navy, Air Force and Army, either through the Regular or Reserve forces, selflessly dedicate their lives to keep all Canadians safe and uphold democracy and human rights around the world.

While our men and women commit their lives to protect Canadians, they need the federal government to be a full and reliable partner. Currently, the federal government is moving too slow to provide the proper equipment, housing and childcare that CAF and their families need. With the climate crisis becoming more urgent, such as wildfires starting earlier and earlier, we need a military with the resources to meet Canadians in their time of need.

More needs to be done to combat the toxic culture rampant in our military colleges as well as within the Armed Forces themselves. Women and everyone who serves deserve a safe place to learn and work, free from harassment and misconduct.

Our CAF has sacrificed so much for our country. That’s why New Democrats will keep fighting for the support and resources CAF needs, from updated, modern equipment to adequate housing.

To the men and women who serve – thank you for what you do.”
