WINNIPEG — On Wednesday evening, in a contested nomination meeting, New Democrats selected Leila Dance as their candidate for the upcoming Elmwood—Transcona by-election.

“People in Winnipeg just got rid of a Conservative premier who cut public health care and tried to privatize services, which cost you more. That’s what Conservatives do, they cut,” said Canada’s NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh. “Families in Elmwood –Transcona have trusted New Democrats, like Daniel Blaikie and Wab Kinew, because they know we’ll always have your back. We fought to deliver the dental care seniors and children need, free birth control for 9 million women, diabetes medication for 3.7 million people, and we’re the only party tackling the corporate greed driving up your grocery and cell phone bills.

“Leila is a strong leader with deep roots in the community. She’s going to stand up for services that hardworking people rely on. This by-election people will have a choice between sending Leila to Ottawa to make their life more affordable or sending a Poilievre Conservative that will be using their power to cut healthcare and other services people rely on while making their rich friends richer.”

Although the election date has yet to be announced, Singh will be in Winnipeg this coming weekend for the official launch of their campaign. The NDP is already advertising in the riding and their campaign office will be opening on Saturday, May 25.

“It’s an honour to be selected as the NDP candidate here in Elmwood-Transcona. I want to offer my congratulations to Leilani for running a strong race,” said Dance. “There is a lot of work to do in our community to ensure that hardworking families get a break on their grocery prices, everyone can find a home they can actually afford and health care services are there when your family need them. That’s my commitment to the people of Elmwood—Transcona, I’m going to fight tirelessly to make sure your life is better and more affordable because New Democrats work for you not wealthy CEOs or corporate insiders.”
