Canada’s NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“Today marks the first day of Asian Heritage Month. This month is a time to honour and celebrate all of the achievements and contributions Canadians with Asian heritage have made and continue to make across the country.

Over the last decades, immigrants have uprooted their lives to come to Canada from East Asia, Southern Asia, Western, Central, and Southeast Asia, making Canada their home. They bring a rich culture of languages, cuisines, and religions.

As we reflect on their contributions, it’s important to remember past discrimination and racism that have persisted throughout our history—and that continue till this day. We must do more to uplift and listen to the community and rectify past harms.

On behalf of all New Democrats, I encourage everyone to take time to celebrate Asian Heritage Month and to learn more about the rich diversity Asian communities bring to Canada.”
