NDP Statement on Earth Day 2024 « Canada’s NDP

Canada’s NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“Today is Earth Day, where Canadians join people across the globe in celebrating our planet we all share and recommit ourselves to tackling the climate crisis.
The climate crisis is one of the biggest threats facing Canadians and people worldwide. With flooding, wildfires, and extreme weather occurring more often than ever, it is clear – urgent action needs to be taken now. Canadians expect their government to take this crisis seriously and make decisions to ensure a safe and healthy future for our kids.
However, the Liberals continue to lag on climate action, even according to their own standards. They bought the Trans Mountain pipeline and continue to fund and support it, despite the protests from experts, environmentalists and First Nations. Liberals always place the profits of Big Oil and Gas corporations ahead of people’s well-being and our environment.

We need a change. The record-breaking wildfires from last summer have clearly shown that Canada is not immune to the impacts of climate change. Now more than ever, we need a government that will take immediate action — action that matches the urgency and scale of the climate and biodiversity crises. However, this Liberal government has delayed funding of almost $15 billion to climate initiatives. Canadians expect better and deserve better.

And don’t trust Pierre Poilievre to fix it or even take this global crisis seriously — he doesn’t have a climate plan, and Conservatives can’t even agree that climate change is real.
Canada needs leadership that takes climate crisis seriously — a government that cares about the hundreds of thousands of Canadians who were forced to flee their home last summer because of the threat of wildfires. And while both the Liberals and Conservatives refuse to stop propping up the fossil fuel industry, New Democrats are working to build a better and cleaner future for all.”
