NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

NDP MLAs say new affordable homes coming for renters in the Kootenays

CASTLEGAR – New Democrat MLAs Katrine Conroy and Brittny Anderson say that funding announced today will bring 127 new affordable rental homes to the Kootenays, to help more people with moderate and low incomes find a place to live.

“Building more affordable homes not only makes life better for the new residents who will move in – it also makes the entire community stronger and more resilient,” said Katrine Conroy, MLA for Kootenay West. “When people have a safe and stable place to live, they can contribute to a thriving community.”

In the Kootenays, the following organizations had successful Community Housing Fund applications:

  • Lu’ma Native Housing Society – 68 homes for families, seniors, and people living with disabilities at 925 Columbia Avenue, Castlegar
  • Trail & District Senior Citizens’ Villa Society – 41 homes for seniors at 1955 Seventh Ave, Trail
  • Creston Valley Community Housing Society – 18 homes for families, young adults, people living with disabilities, and women and children, in Creston. (Undisclosed address for safety reasons.)

“Communities like Creston are seeing a growing demand for affordable rental housing,” said Brittny Anderson, MLA for Nelson-Creston. “Our government is taking action with funding that supports the great work already underway by municipalities and non-profits. It’s great to see this progress towards our shared goals.”

The Community Housing Fund is a $3.3 billion investment to build more than 20,000 affordable rental homes for people with moderate and low incomes by 2031-32.

Projects were approved based on several criteria, including prioritized populations and the impact the project would have on the community’s housing needs.
