NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

MLAs Malcolmson and Routley say funding will help grow local music industry in Nanaimo and North Cowichan

February 7, 2024 at 5:23 pm  Politics, Provincial

LADYSMITH – MLAs Sheila Malcolmson and Doug Routley say that funding announced today will help B.C.-based musicians to develop their careers and grow the local music industry.

“Music brings people together, which is just what we need,” said Sheila Malcolmson, MLA for Nanaimo. “Our new funding will support Nanaimo’s musical community – both our local musicians and events”

Over $3.3 million is being distributed to hundreds of artists and companies for career development, live music events, business development, industry initiatives, and attracting out-of-province talent to record in B.C.

In the region, recipients include:

Career development stream:

  • Aaron Pritchett, $25,000 (Nanaimo)
  • Liv Wade, $8,000 (Cobble Hill)

Music industry initiatives stream:

  • BC Immersive Audio Education – Sync or Swim Music, $12,000 (Ladysmith)
  • The Sync or Swim Music Event – Sync or Swim Music, $15,000 (Ladysmith)

“The impact music has on us all is immeasurable, and it’s important we support our local artists to continue to create,” said Doug Routley, MLA for Nanaimo-North Cowichan. “This funding will support artists in our region to create music that can be appreciated by people around the world.”

More than 200 musicians and music companies will benefit from this funding, which is part of the New Democrat government’s $7.5 million investment in 2023 to develop and support musician’s careers and promote the music industry here in B.C. This is one of the many ways the government is supporting creative industries and creative professionals in the province.
