A Hidden Homestead in the Dry Hills

A Hidden Homestead in the Dry Hills

Most of the homesteads in the hills have been abandoned for over 100 years and there is not much to find, but a few have remained mostly hidden and forgotten.    We can find them by accessing historical records and by using Google Earth.    Then it requires hiking to the potential site to further investigate.    We spotted an old site in the distance from a hilltop, and, a week later, I hiked 7 km to see the homestead/ranch site firsthand.   It was a grey day with a light snowfall.

The site had a small cabin, set up for 2 people.    There was a larger out building, probably a barn, set into the hillside.    There were corrals, fences, water troughs, some old vehicle parts and lots of debris.

I think the site might have been a seasonal operation, a remnant of cowboy life in the Dry Hills.

A few images are shared here.    Click an image for a lightbox view and a caption.

For all of the hidden homesteads articles, the locations are not provided, on purpose.    Anyone can do the same research and explorations, but I know that few will, and that may result in the sites left intact for a few more years.

About KamloopsTrails

I started exploring this area in 1976 and I continue to follow tracks and routes wherever they lead, with the aid of map, compass, GPSr and camera. After many dead-ends, but also many discoveries, I chose to share this information. Getting out 12 months each year, I continue to explore trails, tracks, routes, and waterways of the Kamloops area and beyond.
