Parliamentary secretary’s statement on Women’s History Month
Kelli Paddon, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity, has issued the following statement in honour of Women’s History Month:
“For more than 30 years, people across Canada have recognized Women’s History Month in celebration of the many women and girls who have helped shape our province and our country.
“This year’s theme, Through Her Lens: Celebrating the Diversity of Women, reinforces the contributions of all women and highlights the many ways that Indigenous women, 2SLGBTQIA+ people, racialized, immigrant and newcomer women, and women with disabilities persevere despite the inequities they face.
“It is for all these people that our government has committed to address systemic barriers and inequity. This includes historic investments in high-quality, affordable child care, providing free contraceptives, introducing new pay transparency legislation and working to eliminate systemic racism through our new Anti-Racism Data Act.
“Because we know violence against women, girls and gender-diverse people continues to be prevalent in all communities, we also continue to support violence against women programs, safe homes for women and children in need, funding for survivors of sexualized violence, Indigenous-led approaches in response to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and age-appropriate education and awareness starting with our youngest learners.
“We know many women and girls of all backgrounds continue to face adversity and make incredible contributions to B.C. communities. From business leaders and those working on the front line delivering services people depend on, to our family and community members who are such an integral part of shaping our society and shared future, we are with you as partners and allies.
“Each and every day, I am reminded of the progress made by women and girls of all walks of life in our province. I invite all British Columbians to join me in celebrating women and girls breaking down barriers, fighting for justice and equality, and creating a stronger, more welcoming and inclusive province for everyone.”
