Taylor Basin – Kamloops Trails
Some years ago we traveled to Tyax Lodge on Tyaughton Lake to do some hiking in the South Chilcotin Ranges. One of the hikes we did was into Taylor Basin. We drove on backroads up the Mud Creek FSR to Taylor Creek, then started the long hike up the valley into the basin under Eldorado Mountain and Taylor Peak.
The area’s sub-alpine valleys and passes below colorful peaks makes for scenic and rewarding hiking.
We were impressed by the quality of the hiking experience – moderate inclines, open views, wildflowers, good single track trails, historic sites, and many route choices.
The area now sees more mountain bikers than hikers. This group came from Spruce Lake on their way down to Gun Lake.
The old cabin in the basin was used by miners working the Lucky Strike Mine. The cabin is still in use by campers, especially when the weather turns wet.

At the upper end of the basin, trails link up and carry on into the South Chilcotin Mountains Provincial Park.

It has been our intention to return for a multi-day backpacking trip and it is still on our “to-do-list.”
