Liberals comment on Steven Guilbeault’s plan to resign as MP – May 27, 2026

Ministers and Liberal MPs speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal party holds its weekly caucus meeting.

Ministers François-Philippe Champagne (finance), Joël Lightbound (government transformation, public works and procurement) and Julie Dabrusin (environment), as well as MPs James Maloney, Yvan Baker, Jacques Ramsay, Madeleine Chenette, Jean-Yves Duclos, Eric St-Pierre, Fayçal El-Khoury, Stéphane Lauzon, Karina Gould, Jaime Battiste, Matt Jeneroux, Taleeb Noormohamed, Will Greaves and Ben Carr speak about the state of the party’s caucus amidst reports of Steven Guilbeault’s plan to resign as an MP.

Jeneroux also takes questions on the energy deal between the Alberta and federal governments and on Alberta separatist sentiment.

Minister Lena Diab (immigration) confirms that she will be subject to questioning later in week at the Committee of the Whole.

Following the meeting, Guilbeault announces to reporters that he plans to officially resign as an MP later in the summer.
