Just The Facts: Carney’s Costly Jetsetting

Ottawa, ON – After 11 years of Liberals, life has never been costlier for Canadians, and the price of groceries has outpaced overall inflation for every month Mark Carney has been Prime Minister. But while Canadians are pinching pennies and stressing over their household budget, Carney is lavishing himself while failing to deliver results on his international trips.

This was confirmed by newly released invoices from three trips to Europe last year, which cost taxpayers $195,400 in in-flight catering alone. On one trip to Rome last May, Carney spent $93,780 – more than double the tab his predecessor spent in 2024. That one trip alone is equal to half a decade of groceries for a family of four.

While Canadians have been paying more for groceries every month, during his first year in office, Carney billed taxpayers $524,000 on airplane food alone. None of these trips resulted in any meaningful results: there is no agreement to get our resources to Europe, he has not negotiated a single new trade agreement, and there is still no deal with our largest trading partner despite saying he would have one by July of last year.

April’s inflation data found that prices at the grocery store continued rising 3.8 per cent year-over-year, nearly double the inflation target, while the cost of energy has jumped 19.2 per cent and the price of gas is 28.6 per cent higher.

As wallets are being squeezed, Canadians are becoming more indebted and less able to pay. According to the latest figures from Equifax, overall insolvencies “have increased to levels not seen since 2009,” rising almost 19 per cent year-over-year. A total of 1.5 million Canadians missed at least one credit payment last quarter, with mortgage delinquencies soaring 52 per cent in Ontario and 36 per cent in British Columbia, compared to last year.

Carney promised he would spend less so Canadians can invest more. It was just another illusion: his lavish spending has doubled the deficit, increased prices and pushed Canadians into more debt. Only Conservatives will lower the cost of government to lower the cost of living.Ottawa, ON – After 11 years of Liberals, life has never been costlier for Canadians, and the price of groceries has outpaced overall inflation for every month Mark Carney has been Prime Minister.
