In October, Albertans will be asked a question that could set in motion the breakup of the country. For decades, western alienation has simmered in Alberta, with many feeling the province’s interests, energy industry and identity have been ignored or undermined by Ottawa. Premier Danielle Smith says hundreds of thousands of Albertans deserve to have their voices heard. To unpack how Alberta reached this point and what could happen next, Marc-André Cossette speaks with pollster Janet Brown, who has tracked separatist sentiment in the province for nearly a decade, and political columnist Jen Gerson, co-editor of The Line and a voice behind Alberta’s Vote to Stay movement.
